It took me slightly over 3 days to finish reading Kien Nguyen's The Unwanted. His life story got me hooked and I was determined to read till the end. If I had the luxury of time, I would have finished the whole book in one sitting.
The Unwanted is an autobiographical book centered around the life of an innocent Amerasian boy from Vietnam and the struggles of his family and friends. Similar to Hayslip's "When Heaven and Earth Changed Places", the reader can feel the pain of the Vietnamese people who suffered the historic Vietnam war.
The book starts with Kien's lavish birthday celebration and moves on to the sufferings and hardship endured by Kien, his mum, grandparents throughout the Vietnam struggle and how he eventually succeeded to escape to USA. It is unfair to Kien to summarize his story in a short review.
The text is easy to read and understand. Everyone who has an interest in Vietnam should read this book.
